It is estimated that 30 - 100 million sharks are definned per year for the making of soup. This is a fairly controversial practice. Is this okay or is there something wrong with what they are doing? Whats your opinion?

  1. I am compelled to be against it because I don't advocate animal cruelty, which this seems to be a case of. But at the same time, I am not a vegan or vegetarian, I eat meat frequently and often times those animals are also treated poorly, so this is no different than that really. Personally, I would never eat shark soup, but again, it would be hypocritical of me to condemn this practice.

  2. I personally think that it's just like any other meat we eat. Why just see the harm in shark soup. It's the exact same thing eating chicken, shrimp and other fishes. If you think it's wrong and are eating other meats then you need to think twice on what you are saying.

  3. This is not a wrong practice, Among the delicacies in the world such as foie-gras that require a lot of work and cruelty this is not the worst. Cutting the fin of the shark is wasteful; shark meat is not editable because of high content of various poisonous substances. The shark is not valued for its meat, but it’s fin, but the fin that make up hardly 5% of the shark has barely any nutrients and taste that promote health or give you any sort of immunity to disease, it is just the texture of the shark fin that is prized. In my opinion, there are many other things to eat that have great texture such as potato chips. But maybe because shark fin is something prohibited by PETA, controversial, and require you to have a good couple of zeros in your bank to eat away. Some humans want more prestige or bragging rights that they have now had shark fin soup.

  4. I don't think its too wrong that people are making soup out of shark fin.I mean unless you're vegetaian and against eating meat and all. Plus, Sharks are dangerous and cruel. Not only it hurt surfers occasionly but they eat little fishes as well. So i guess thats when you call it karma when they get eaten by people.

I don't think it is wrong but to me anything that once lived in water is gross, but i guess people like fish and eat them so might as well eat some "yummy" sharks. Nothing wrong with it i would just never try it!

What is different between this action and say shaving sheep for their fur, or using hooves and horns for various reasons? I'm not saying it's right, in my opinion we should just let the animals be, I just think if the other actions are socially acceptable, shouldn't this be as well?

  7. I believe that it is in a way wrong but so is hunting deer and a lot of people do that. So even though it seems wrong to me to definn a shark its like killing an animal for food. to many its necessary but it can be avoided.

I think messing with animals is wrong unless it is completely necessary. If you were going to starve in the wilderness, animals are a good source of nutrients to keep us going, demonstrated in Man vs. Wild. But if we have other sources of food available to us, it is wrong to go out of our way to harm animals. We should treat wildlife with respect and protect the life on earth. People eating shark fin soup probably have many other options. Eat a bowl of Progresso.

  9. It really depends on the effects such losses have on the shark species. If there is hardly any, then it is just natural predator and prey relationship. If the amount hunted negeatively affects the shark population, the practice should be legally monitered to insure the continued exsistance of the shark species that is hunted.

I think that it depends on what it is doing to the population. If the population is doing ok with the mount of sharks that they are taking out then it is just keeping the population in a position that the animals are not getting diseases or other problems that weaken the species. It has been proven that hunting animals such as deer and elk helps the animals breed more efficently but over hunting is what hurts them so i think it depends on how the population of sharks is doing.

  11. I don't think that it is right for people to remove a shark's fin. it's a form of animal cruelty. I personally don't eat meat but I think that if an animal is going to be killed for it's meat all of it should be used. That way the animal's death is not a complete waste.

  12. Personally, I see no problem with it. Sure, it could be done differently to make it better for the wild populations of sharks, say maybe raise em' in farms for like they do for salmon and such, but it's just like tuna farming in my mind.

It doesnt matter to me if they farm them like cattle for the fins, but cutting the fin alone off and throwing them back is stupid

I think capturing the sharks is the same as killing animals such as deer. It doesn't really bother me because there's nothing you can do about it but I think there should be a limit put on it just like other wildlife.

  15. I think it's fine i don't know why it's controversial they've been eating the soup for a long time. Why let something go on for a long time then say no you can't do that?

  16. I disagree with what they are doing because its not necessary to kill sharks just to make soup. If they keep doing what there doing then there wont be any sharks for them to kill for the soups anyways so they might as well just not do it.

  17. I agree with what they are doing because hunters kill other animals for food and they don't kill them to the fun of it. As long as they use it for eating then its fine. But its only okay to eat not for the fun of it. So other than that I disagree and they should stop.

  18. Well most activists would be pretty upset that this is happening to sharks around the world every year and how cruel they think it is, but when you get down to it--they're animals. Just like cows and chickens and deer and ostriches and dragons. We harvest their meat so we can eat it and survive. Seeing as how we kill about 35 million cows every year, not that big of a deal. It's not for sport or for "fun" its just, food, you know.

  19. I disagree. I believe you should only hunt to survive. I don't believe you need shark soup to survive.

  20. No i dont think its wrong to eat shark soup because it really just like any other meat. i mean we eat alot of other strange things such as squid and frogs. i believe meat is meat, even though i probably wouldnt ever try shark its just like any other meat we eat like chicken, beef, and such.

  21. Honestly, it's no different than eating any other meat, aside from the fact that it's wasteful. As long as they're not endangering the shark species I say go for it. Shark soup sounds gross though, and expensive.
