What do you think the limiting factor will be for the human population? How close are we to caring capacity?

55 comments:

  1. I believe that the limiting factor for the human population will be the amount of food we need. Once we reach the limit there will literally be too many mouths to feed. All the food that you comes from somewhere and there is no unlimited supply of that resource. When the population exceeds the amount of available resources, that is when you will see the limit for the human population.

  2. I strongly believe that humans are close to the carrying capacity of the Earth. Most areas are overpopulated as is and it's becoming more and more difficult each year to sustain the rising population. Technology helps to solve many of the problems with human growth but currently it isn't enough. It's time to go live on mars :/

  3. I think that we r close to carrying capacity because many places are over populated. I think the limit will be when we run out of food and places to live. Eventually they will run out of room to build houses.

  4. The limiting factor for the human population will be oxygen. We will cut down all of the trees. The pollution will be too much, and we will suffocate the humans. A volcano will erupt, like Yellow Stone, and we will die from the smog. The pollution and trees situation will most likely not happen in my lifetime, so I don't believe we are very close at all. Yellow Stone is over due and can erupt at any time.

  5. I think we're close to reaching the carrying capacity but if we're careful with our resources more people can have more people. Food isn't really an issue as of right now. Trees, when you cut them down you have to plant them back.

  6. As a society we need to be aware of the impact we make on each other and the world. I think that there has been an exponential increase in population, but the only worries I have is that we will get so concerned with being “green” we will not make the wisest choices to sustain a high carrying capacity. For example when we are trying to make fuel from corn I find that ridiculous when we have people starving to death around the world. I don’t think we are near a carrying capacity, we just need to keep the well being of others in our thoughts.

  7. Honestly, I think that we're no where near carrying capacity if we just managed to get our heads out of our... butts... long enough to take care of what we have. Recycle, reduce pollution, all that jazz. America doesn't produce all the food we could, in fact the government pays farmers NOT to grow too much, so food is a non issue. It's all about making sure we take care of the earth. If we manage that, we'll be fine and our species can keep growing.

  8. In the United States the total population has risen from 26 to 87.4 people per square mile from 1910 to 2010. In China, with a population density of 365 persons per square mile, they are not suffering from extreme starvation but are instead growing and prospering. This leads me to believe that yes our resources are finite but are plentiful enough to support us for 10 more years at the least.

  9. I think we are very close to carrying capacity and something big might fix that. There could be a big population decrease if food is very limited or if we have another depression.

  10. Im my opinion, I think that the limiting factor to cause the human population to dieback, will be that we will run out of resources like oil, and coal. Global warming will also be a factor because it will cause there to be ocean rising, which will decrease the land size.

  11. i think we are close to carrying capacity. The factors that will keep us at this level is, not enough food. there wont be enough food to let everyone survive. But until then people will continue to get fatter and eat more.

    ReplyDelete
  12. i think that were close to carrying capacity, so close that we might reach overshoot in about 15-20 years. The limiting factor will probably end up being food because there are too many people and there might not be as much food as there used to be. And now people are overeating so that's also causing the limitations.

I think the limiting factor for humans is things such as oil and coal. Once we run out of those, we will have to find something else to get our energy from. I think we are close, but not too close to our carrying capacity. People will be able to find a way to sustain life even if we overshoot the carrying capacity.

  14. What will probably happen is the core will overhet someday and like melt us all. First I think all vegetation will die off slowly from being over heated then the oceans will start to boil. The planet will become very hot and hard to breath on, we'll probably die from asphyxiation or being baked.

  16. I think we are close to carrying capacity. But as far as limiting our population goes, I don't think we necessarily need to worry too much as long as we are careful with our resources and take care of our pollution problems I think we'll be okay for the most part. -Amelia Haack

  17. I believe the world's carrying capacity is much greater than most people seem to think it is. Obviously we will reach it at some point, but if we just conserve our resources we should be fine. There are many opportunities for people to recycle so if we just take advantage of those things we will be fine.

  18. When we reach our carrying capacity we would know that we reached it by not having that many resources to take care of the worlds population. They're are many ways we could help to not reach that and that would be recycling and not using as much as we already do. Taking short showers, decomposing fruits and vegetables, and recycling paper would be a great help in saving our resources.

  19. I think the limiting factor would be people dying from diseases in the poor countries because they don't have the money or resources to get the help they will need. I also think that starvation will be a big problem in those countries because they have to many mouths to feed but not enough food. I think it will take awhile for us to reach carrying capacity.

  20. i think we are very close to our carrying capacity today. i think money will be the reason we all die that and because the mayans said we are dieing this year. and if that doesnt happen money will be the factor because if your too broke youll just want to kill yourself because gas prices are so high!

  21. Well I think the limiting factor will have to do with FOOD. I think it will deal with food because someday there will be to many people to feed at the rate we are going and we just will not have enough food to feed everyone some day. That's why I think the limiting factor will be food.

There are many factors that are going to determine if our population will start to decrease. We are running out of oil.Without oil people will lose jobs, trade will stop, and travel will be nearly impossible. Also if we run out of food. people will die of starvation. If a disease started spreading around that could be a factor. I think we are to medically advanced for that to happen, but you never know.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that the limiting factors are food and oil. Right now the oil prices are killing us on how expensive it is. And food is one of the main resources that everybody needs. If we have a huge population then we will run out of resources fast. I do think that we are close to carrying capacity because of how we are struggling in many different areas. Slowly is unemployment rate is going up which can be a disastrous event again.

  24. I think we are very close to reach the carrying capacity. The limiting factors will mainly have to deal with resources and space. Once we reach the peak point of resources and space we have, the population will start to decrease because it will reach the carrying capacity and will not be able to support any more population.

  25. I think limiting factors will be that we will start to run out of food it will be even worse in poor country s because there isn't birth control available. We could also run out of fresh water or living space. I think we have already reached carrying capacity measures need to be taken before me over populate. Melissa Vazquez per. 3

  27. There are several limiting factors to the human population growth. One of the largest of these is food. As a species we tend to over produce and over use. Another limiting factor is our fossil fuels, we depend on them and once they are gone that's it. Oil is one of the largest concerns. We are relatively close to carrying capacity. I think that we will most likely reach carrying capacity in around one hundred years, which in the long term isn't all that far off.

  28. I think that soon we will run out of oil because there is a limited supply of that. Then this will cause all other resources to be limited because we wont have adequate transportation to get things from one place to another. It's hard to say when this will happen but I believe it will be somewhere around 500-1000 years from now so no, I don't think that carrying capacity will be reached anytime soon.

  29. The limiting factor has to be when we run out of our resources. Our main resources hvae to be food and oil. When run out of these things then thats our limiting factor.I dont think were close to our caring capacity. Its propaly in like a 100 years or so , maybe longer.

  30. I think the limiting factor is something completely unexpected, I think food is not it but maybe some disease that is unknown to people and wipe out the population like the black plague. I think it's this because humans are very good at planning and if they know something is going to happen they try to prevent this. I think our carrying capacity is going to be unexpected because in the future that's not here currently then we really don't know P3 Elizabeth

I think the limiting factor will be air and then food. Soon we will pollute the world so much that plants and trees that give us air will die and then we wont have that. Next we wont have food anymore because if we have no air for the plants and animals then they will also die. Then we will all die. I also think we are kind of close to our carrying capacity because everyone reproduces but also everyone dies. So i think its probably in the middle.

  32. When it comes down to it i really believe we're all fine. think of it this way... people die every day, people are born everyday so why do we really have to worry about it? plus if people really want to freak out to much about it then all the forest area we have can be turned into housing for some people (not all of it obviously). In other words, i really dont think that we're gonna reach carrying capacity too soon. On the other hand when and if we ever do reach it (carrying capacity) then i believe the determining factor for that would be : when it reaches about +4,000,000 in the united states alone.(just a guess)

  33. I believe the first limiting factors for the human population will be natural resources like fossil fuels and air quality; and then living space and food. I believe the human population will reach its carrying capacity within the next couple decades but by then I bet half of the human population will be living on mars or some other foreign planet. I believe that the limiting factor for us humans will be our limited resources such as food and fresh ready to go drinking water. I also believe supporting factors that will lead to being limiting factors are things such as the amount of living space for the worlds population. I think that the human population is close to carrying capacity because the amount of food and water we produce is already starting to become limited along with resources.

  35. Large limiting factors are food and environment. We are above the earth's carrying capacity and the human population continues to grow. This reduces the amount of food and natural resources available, if we do not create a more sustainable lifestyle worldwide. Pollution is taking its toll on air quality and the ozone, and a large natural disaster or disease outbreak might be what it takes to wipe out some of the population to regain balance.

  36. Peoples eyes need to be opened to this, that way we could realize that we need to stop having sooo many babies because as soon as we do that we don't need to worry about having enough food for everyone or having as many homes built that cause damage on the earth. -Jasmine zangari

  37. I think the limiting factor of human population are mainly resources. At some point, we will run out of food and drinking water. One cause of this may be global warming as to growing certain crops or kinds of food. Also, too many forests and trees are already getting cut down right now and the number of the loss of trees will increase. This leads to high air pollution which creates more problems for humans. A smaller factor might be living space, but I don't consider it as one of the important problems. Besides that, I don't think you could do a one-child-policy in a lot of countries so it is sort of impossible to decrease the amount of people living on the earth if it's not to natural problems and factors.

  38. I think our limiting factor will be space. We need space, not only to live, but we also need space to grow food. Once we run out of space what will happen? Do we move to Antarctica to live with the penguins? No, then we'd freeze and die. Sucks.

  39. I believe that the limiting factoring earth is food supply. I mean yeah we have farm and all that, but what is going to happen when people get lazy? We are going to stop farming and try to find an alternative for food. That won't last forever. I believe that we are very close to capacity. I think within the next 100-200 years, we will have reached capacity and the world will start to fall apart.

I agree with Tyler and Becca. While we do live on this big planet we are running out of space. Unless we figure out how we are going to get more space, we need to watch our population. It is said that girls who have sex before the age of 16 will most likely have a baby before they graduate school and with in the next 24months of the babies life the mother will be pregnant again. This shows how out population is growing. Not a good sign.

  41. The limiting factor will be when we figure out there is no more food, supplies, or space on the Earth for everyone. Natural selection will most likely take place and the "weak" will die off. As the population grows there is a higher chance that some disease will break through that very few if any are immune to and because of the population problem it will spread very rapidly. We have to figure out something to stop the growth soon.

  42. the earth's population situation is not ideal. the limiting factor is when we run out of resources..especially water. we are close to capacity, it wil be interesting to see if we can figure things out, or if the world population will continue to grow and cause all hell to break loose.

I think the limiting factor will be when our society runs out of clean drinking water and gasoline. As soon as transportation is not at our fingertips, we will be forced to adapt, which will probably put a stand still for a while. I think we are getting close to our capacity of people, and it's about time we slow down.

  44. I think that the limiting factor will be when we are out of water, food, and our air is so polluted we can't breath. We put so much bad toxins into the air and there are only so many trees left to give us oxygen. As our population grows the more trees we will cut down to build houses. As a nation I believe that unless we watch our resources and how we treat our earth, our world population will be too much for Earth very soon.

  47. I think that the limiting factor for us will be when we run out of food and water, mainly water, to supply our needs.
