National Geographic Human Genome

We will be going to the computer lab this week t0 look at human migratory patterns. As you look at the human mapping systems I want you to find the most interesting part. You should be able to find genetic markers as well as the history of human movement. On this post I want you to choose one topic that interests you with this research and tell why you like it. Be specific on what you like and why.

  1. Having neighbors of a completely different race is nothing new, but when studied a bit further they have common ancestors, and even common genes. To be able to look at your differently colored neighbor and know that both their and my ancestors could have come from the exact same place further than East Africa, further than their explorations, all the way down to settling in the same place is pretty cool.

  2. I found this thing on Time Line: Human migration that didn't make any sense. It talked about this "scientific eve" from 200,00 to 150,000 years ago. it says that every human came for her. but then they talk about this "scientific Adam" that for 60,000 years ago and it says that every male Y chromon came from him but that doesn't make sense for the fact that the scientific Eve was creating males before the scientific Adam was even alive.

  3. I found something on how red hair and freckles could be a mutation. It explains that red hair and freckles could be a mutation developed to help humans let in more sun to produce vitamin D. Could it really be a human adaptation? Or are they just stretching things?

  4. I found a thing on why i am a red head. The thing that interested me the most was that people from eurasia brought over alot of vitamin c to america and other countries east of asia like ireland. The vitamin c would make the skin tone lighter and eventually turn the eye pigmant and hair color lighter colors. this relates to me because i have red hair and it is interesting to me to see where it actually camr from and i came to have it.

  5. I like where I could click on Globe on Human History and click anywhere on the globe to trace back some early arrivings of like tribes and their migrations. An interesting fact that was said was that Native Americans were most likely descendants of the Ice Age who crossed the Bering Strait land bridge in pursuit of reindeer, oxen, and mammoths. That was something interesting thatI could'nt remember hearing.

  6. I'm Hungarian, there isn't a lot of closely related cultures to us so it's interesting to me to see that my ancestors came from the same place in Africa as the people who live in Japan's ancestors. I think it's pretty cool that people who look so different are actually from the same place.

The part that confuses me and that I don't like is that people who are related, even just a little bit, when they have kids aren't there mutations? Like they could be born with something wrong with them? I don't understand why that doesn't happen to everyone than. Since everyone is slightly related to everyone else. If this is all true wouldn't we all have mutations?

  7. When I was looking at the maps where human began from. I was suprised that all the humans came form the europe and africa. The other thing I like was that you can give some blood to some sciencists and they can give your history of your blood line which I thought was cool.

  8. I found that the most interesting discovery out of all my findings in the computer lab this week, going over national geographic website was how they took a series of families and tracked down their ancestory not just through a particular area, but throughout the world over a long span of time. It's fascinating what the world has become capable of these days.

  9. The fact that we have different colored people in the U.S., and we might be able to trace both of our ancestries back to the same place, is pretty amazing. If pangea was true, which I believe it was, alot of things become alot clearer to me.

  10. I chose to look at the timeline of Human Migration. At first I thought it was a bit dull, but as I read on I became more and more intrigued. I learned that scientists believe there was originally just one human female, "Scientific Eve" If you want to call her that. And there were several land bridges that connected the world until about 11,000 years ago when the land bridge between russia nd alaska closed. It would be the last time the citizens of the americas would be cut off from the rest of the world until Columbus tried to find China (Unsuccessfully).

  11. The Human Genome Project is a project that maps out the thousands of genes in the human body. this will be used in the future to find more medical discoveries and med tech. the cost of it will be 10,000 dolars at the moment and estimit that it will go down to just a thousand by 2014!

  12. For example, right now you can trace your ancestors from like Europe and now your family lives in the United States so when future generations look up their ancestry it will say you came from the U.S. and Europe and so on. I like the idea that you can pin point where your bloodlines came from. I wouldn't mind finding out where my ancestors came from because I have black, white, indian, and some other things in me so it would be cool to know where exactly i came from.

  13. i choose to look at multi colored hair as part of the human genome project and i found out that it has nonthing to do with ansestry but it is a mutation although naturally multi colored facial hair is mostly found in people of scottish desent. This topic was interesting to me because i wondered why my beard is red and brown.

  15. I thought it was really cool that we all come from some similiar place in time. It makes everyone even just a little more equal. Just because maybe were different colors doesn't mean we are two different species. We all have common situations. Its awesome that there's ways we can find that put and our world has come that far.

  16. i think the most interesting part about human migrotory pattern would be werewe started i mean we are all over the world but where did we originate from and where we moved and why what cuaseed us to move across the world like we did

  17. I find it interesting that the government is finding more and more out about the people they're controlling. Satellites can pinpoint where a cellphone is, and human migratory patterns trace our bloodlines wherever we go. I also find it weird that people want to know where they're from. I understand knowing who you're related to, so you're not marrying a relative, but where exactly you're from, it doesn't matter. I think pinpointed where everyone is from can cause future race issues.

  18. I think its interesting that we started somewhere and moved to a totally different place like on the other side of the world and how we all came from the same place but we have different colored skin and whatever.

  19. something i like about how humans moved around, is how different people from other places can come here. and its weird to thing that people from all over have moved around over the years to make different naitonalities

  20. I think it is interesting how we can all be traced to somewhere in Africa, so we are all related. The fact that they can do research and find out where people originated is really awesome. The question is, is it for real?

  21. as i was reading i read aabout human migration and from 200,000- 150,000 yrs ago the genetic journey of eeryone today began with a women callled scientific eve. she lived in africa and passed her dna along through cell structures called mitochondria and only women passed this down to further generations.

  23. i think the fact that we can trace our geneology at all is amazing being able to know where your family originated from and how far they have traveled it makes you want to understand the decicions behind those migrations.its wierd that we can no that much information from thousands of years ago.

  24. I do believe that adaptations have occurred in humans over thousands of years, and i do believe that it's very likely that red heads have adapted in order to take in vitamin D. This is a very important vitamin in the human diet and can be a good thing. Though lighter skin isn't always that much fun to have, in my opinion.
