What's the reasoning behind this?

Pets have been around through out the history of man. We can look to the largest land animals to the smallest and they all hold place in the pet kingdom. There is even a black market to get pets around the world. The reasons for having a pets is just as diverse as the number of pets there are. I think that no matter the reasoning there is a basic need that humans try to fill with pets. The question this week is two part:
First -> What basic need to pets meet?
Second -> Is the type of pet indicative of the personality of the care taker?
Here is an interesting Article about pets in prison

  1. The human need for companionship is filled whether the human in question is aware of it or not. If you have seen Castaway Tom Hanks' companion is Wilson the Volley Ball. Humans are simply incapable of living alone in a happy manner. Animals provide the never-ending source of love we crave and need to thrive. There is absolutely a companionship to certain animals over others for everyone. Just like any other personality you will clash with them or get along with them and thus an owner will either clash or live happily with the personality of certain animals. Cats for instance are more moody and arrognat but more faithful to the owner where dogs are friendly to anyone and everyone. It is a matter of people being around certain animals and whether they enjoy them or not!

  2. Humans have an inate need, whether they realize and/or believe it, to have an animal friend/pet. Animals have an undying, complete, and unconditional love for humans. A human can leave another but a pet, especially dogs and cats, will always love their owner. They love us totally, whether we treat them great or horrible. You can always be sure of your pets loyalty and love to you. Humans cling on to this because it is something they cannot obtain with another human being.

  3. I think of having a pet is one thing a person needs for some kind of "enjoyment" in their lives. Like how a man is with a dog they grow a bond together whether they're out in a park playing frisbee or sitting at home watching tv.

  4. well in first part i think that everone likes having a pet, if they dont then they are not the caring nurturing type to own a pet.For the people who enjoy life most, owning pets is a comfort and can be rewarding to know that there is always someone who loves them no matter what! if you treat a pet right it should be one of your best companions. On number two i have not a doubt that each person who chooses to take on the responsibility of caring for an animal will choose a pet that suits there personality and is to there own personal liking if you are an old lady and have bad bones you might get an older dog from the pound that is smaller more suitable for that specific person

  5. For number 1, I think that, if someone owns a pet, the pet has to contribute something along with the owner. When an owner buys, or saves an animal, the animal feels the need to be faithful to the owner and have a sense of protection over the owner. For the second one, I think that it depends on who the owner is. If there is, say a big thug, who likes to hurt people, he/she is going to have some kind of dog like a Pittbull, or a Rotwiler. They're not going to have something like a kitten, or Poodle. I have heard, that the longer a person has a et, the more they start to look like them.

  6. I would argue that saying that humans need companionship is a universal or innate need is an extreme generalization. There may be plenty of humans who live solitary and happy lives (without pets and without volleyballs and without human companions) and people don't realize it because a) individuals tend to think that other people are like them (ie. I'm not happy unless I have a companion, therefore everyone is unhappy without companions) but they don't go out of their way to research if that is true, and b) hermits are hermits! They don't exit their hermit houses to show the rest of the world that they might be just fine and happy! Sure, some are probably miserable, but maybe some are just fine and they don't feel the need to share that with the rest of the world. ;)

p.s. Dogs can also be very loyal to one person and certain breeds are known for their "one person" tendencies (blue heelers and bull terriers for example.) I'm curious if there are breeds of cats known for being more generous with their love or if the "one person" tendency is truly more common for cats. Any idea?

  7. 1st in my oppinion pets don't meet any needs only wants does anyone really need a pet or do they just want one as an alternative to making human friend or having a kid?

2nd no the type of pet in my oppinion is not indicative to the owners personality. lets say that some serial killer happened to have a pet snake does that mean everyone that has a pet snake has the personality of said serial killer? no.

  8. I think that for most people a pet is a neccesity, but for those that can't handle the responsibilty, a pet is no more than an annoyance. The bond formed between a pet and an owner is irreplaceable, but I guess it depends on the pet. I have three cats, three dogs, and three spiders (including a tarantula) and i have a bond with one cat, and one dog. Not only does a pet fulfill the need for dominance and compassion, but it's an important step in a childs life to fell those things and to learn responibility.

Sure, I guess in some cases the type of pet that a person owns says a lot about their likes and dislikes, if a person owns an Andaconda you know that on some level, they are a badass.

  9. Pets fill needs in people who have what may be a major, or even minor, gap in there mental well being. This may be due to living alone, or because this certain man/woman is not good with people. Either way a pet is perfect for some human beings.
Most people, however, that own any kind of pet do not truly "need" the animal. They only convince themselves that the animal is needed for a fulfilling life. If someone has strong bond with friends and family it is not, in my own opinion, nesesscary for that person to have a pet.
I do own a pet of my own, and I can't lie and tell you that I don't love him. I will say though, if I had never seen my dog Murphy in the first place I would still be the same person.
Overall i do not oppose the owning of an animal. As long as you can provide that animal every thing that it would normally have in its natural habitat.
I believe that when a person is choosing an animal they can sense that an animal is indicative to the person or if it is.
People can generally tell when an animal will make them feel good on the inside, which the majority of the time is the reason we purchase animals. For the warm fuzzy feeling.
So i do think that the type of pet is indicative to the the care taker.

  11. 1.) Having a pet can often bring comfort and joy into the life of most people. That being said, I do not think that pets meet a "basic" human need. Though those two statements seem to contridicate one-another, they may actually make more sense than not. Because of the fact that any healthy, normal, functioning human does not physically or mentally need a pet around, it must be an emotional need, something that can have the biggest imapct on humans, and also one of the most complex. Because of this, pets cannot simply meet a "basic" human need, but meet a more complex need that is tangled in with our ancestory and emotional state.
However, what that need really is, is somewhat of a myserty to many people. In opinion, though, the void that pets fill traces back to our primal roots and can even be seen in other displays of human behavior today. It is almost instinct to care for and nurture some one you yourself have some kind of affections for, whether it be family, friends, or lovers. Through socializing we find friends and lovers, and thus try to help care for them, but as for family we are practically genetically forced to care for them. Our species has nearly evolved to make older and stronger people care for us until we are able to become independent, through our looks as a baby. With the large eyes, small nose, and "cute" face we have nearly tricked ourselves into caring for ourselves. Many domesticated pets also followed suit, and their offspring have adapted to remind some instictive force to help care for and raise that creature. When the animals we have raised become older and more independent, we still care for them, however. This, I believe, is inevitable if you yourself raised them. It's as if some maternal instict kicks in and we stop seeing them as a pet, to a full fledged member of the family. But what about if you didn't raise the pet and still feel the same way? The same effect will still happen. Because you end up caring for the pet, and bonding with the pet. We make, form, and keep emotional bonds, in my opinion, to survive. When you form a bond with some one, you are more likely to help them out in a time of need. This probably traces back to when humans traveled and kept together in groups. If you didn't care for the people in your group, you were less likely to help them in a desperatte situation. So, to wrap this question up, pets meet a need on a much higher level than we may first think. A need that once helped us survive, and now helps us live.

2.) The type of pet GREATLY defines what kind of person will own it and what personality they have. It's much like trying to partner up two strangers in a class project. If their personalites clash, they'll end up butting heads eventually. However, if they find enough in common they may find the other tolerable and even likeable. This, I think, most likely occurs because of how egotistical and narcissistic people really are. We love to talk about ourselves, have the spotlight on us, and so on and so forth. So if an active person decides to get, say, a turtle, for example, not much of a bond may form, though this does not apply to all cases. They pets' and owners' personalities need to match up to some degree for any kind of bond to actually form.

Pets are your best friends if you really looked at it. If yourself is in trouple and you had a pets for a wkile, the pet could sense your are in trouble. To anwser the second question, lets said I the biggest bully in the school and I decided to bring my dog to school I bet he will groul and tried to bite everyone.

  13. I think for the first one that pets need love and care and things like that.
For the second one I think that some pets are just like their owns where some are not.I think the reason behind that is because of how they are raised.Like if the pets are the owner bestfriend then they would act the same.
That is my thought to that.

and i would asume that a person with a pet like a panther or a panda an exotic pet id see to be more as selfish people id rather get to know the person then based on they type of animals they have... but they way an animal acts such as an agressive pitbull id begin to wonder i about dog fighting i dont see it fair for the animals to be raised like that i'll see the owners as selfish people

  17. I think that pets can fill the void that you have if you live alone or if you dont want children then you can have a pet that will be like having a kid. I dont really think certain people with a certain personality have a certain pet. Someone who has a strange personality and they like strange things can have a pet that you would think they wouldnt have. So it just depends.

  20. 1. the basic need that pets meet is felling up part of the owners space of loniness. some prople get pets because maybe they dont want to have kids but still want some type of life their that can be just as entertaining as having a kid just easier.

    2. i think that the dog does have part of the personality as the owner because the pet lives with the owner and its bound to pick up some habits its owner does for example taking naps or something at around the same time or being lazy or active.

I am a strong beleiver in pets having the same behaviors as their owners. its really simple if the owner disrespects the pet than the pet will also be direspectful around other people or other animals. A pets needs are very few and far between that of a humans. Most of them only need love and care and they will be the best pet that you could ever have.

Not always, no. But when you are searching for the 'right' pet for yourself you usually choose one that will fit in well with your lifestyle, and also reflect and share common emotions. Such as a baby and a puppy, or an old lady and a chubby goldfish. Some things are just meant to be. :]

-I believe that the connection between pets and human beings is much ignited through the fact that we are all animals. Going back in history we have discovered that apes could have been a far superior species, but we grew as a race-this being said, I think it serves as a primary example of the fact that humans aren't the only species capable of powerful or dramatic actions, and it proves that we are much closer than we appear. This makes me think that humans have a closer bond with animals just because our status on earth.

  29. Humans inately do seek companionship. And whats a better companion than a furry, warm, and cute dog? Pets hold a special place in the culture of humans. and for as far as we can look back there has been pets. For instance, the Egyptians and cats. So I believe Pets fill the need for companionship that cannot be fully filled by other Humans.

I do not actually believe that the pets personality matches the owners. I think that while we look at the owner as compared to the pet we view the pet as an extension of the owner.

i think humans needs pets in the house so they have something that they can control becasue i think we all need to control something in our life and if we dont we will end up a psycopathic killer or even a 40 year old that lives with his mother still doing chores for money to go buy some orange soda because your mom wont let you drink and if we want to have control of a whole religion you would go without getting laid just to say you talk to "god" but really you are just spazzing out because you just realize you just wasted your whole life to wear a white robe with a golden stick

The personality that a pet has can be from how you treat it when its little and how you act. It does the stuff you do. Therefor will act accordingly. Its your best friend.

  34. Human's have the basic need for companionship, pets supply this. Dogs are a prime example they can be one of the most loyal animals giving a human a security that they'll never be alone, unless the animal dies.

In many ways pets can take on the characterstics of humans, but not always. My cousin's dog tries to mate with everything, my cousin surely does not.

  36. i think that having a pet meets the basic human need of companionship, i don't know why humans crave to be around someone or something familiar but it explains monogamy as well. With all the different types of pets available i don't believe the kind is very indicative of their personalities, in a pinch situation anything familiar a human can cling to seems to help, such as the volleyball "Wilson" in the movie castaway.
