The mallomys giant rat must be huge if it's five times the size of a regular city rat. I think it's weird that the rat not only looks like a city rat but it kind of acts like one too, they both have no fear of humans. It wouldn't be weird if the rat was found in a city but it was found in a remote place. I also think that scientists should explore this area more in depth, in case there are more discoveries to be found.

I must say that it is quite disgusting that there is a rat 5x as large as a rat found in the cities or rats that we have just dissected. i could not imagine how big its teeth must be. Its cool though that we are still finding new species. It means that we arent fully ruining this world since new things can still be made. Although its kinda scary if you think of all the other things they probably havent come across yet. As in diseases,ect.

First, I believe that going into Indonesia or the "Lost World", that possible discoveries of new species are going to be of a mass quantity. Secondly, it is amazing how the found animals that are so familar to people such as rats and posums, yet that they are of different origin and demonstrably different aspects to them when it involves the comparison in development. For example, as many have mentioned, the rat being 5X the size of a regular city rat, is amazing. Think of seperate animals that could potentially be five times there presently known size that could possibly be discovered. This news may seem like nothing to some or many, but it could be the seed that flourishes, when it comes to revealing a whole new set of life in animals

The Cercartetus pygmy possum is remarkably small and is just one of those animals that you would kill for just because of how it looks. it is amazing that our planet is still giving us many many surprises every year. I find this reassuring that there are new species discovered cause that means the animal population is still surviving and going strong.

I think it's really cool that we are still discovering new species. I can't imagine a rat that big though. Hopefully the explorers find many more species in New Guinea, because it really interests me that we still haven't found all the species in the world.

Rats are pretty incredible they are hunters and have been able to thrive in any given surrounding for....forver!! I am not surprised an amazing species such as this is not only continuing to thrive but growing in strength. Its interesting to think about what these animals will be like in the decades to come as our human race grows.
ReplyDeleteI think its interesting that a giant rat was discovered and that it share similar charateristics with city rats, like that they have no fear of humans even though they haven't been around humans like city rats. But I wonder how a rat could get that big and if its possible for city rats to get as big. I can what to see what else we discover in these craters.

I think that by finding these new species of rats is a good thing, because that means there will probably always have new species out there to find. I also think that finding a rat thats 5x larger then other rats is really gross, but also quite amazing, because like what if there is a bird ou tthere 5x larger then the average seagul?

I think it's really cool that we still have a piece of the world that is so prestine and untouched by humans that animals are able to become so diverse. It's really amazing how different the animals are there and I think it's great that the Indonesian government has declared the area a National Wildlife Sanctuary. I still find it slightly disgusting that the rats are five times larger than the rats here and in cities. If they've found animals like the ones that they did, imagine what other types of animals they'll find next. Anything is possible when humans don't get in the way.

how do they know that the large rat looking thing is a rat? Couldnt it be a mix or several things to make up this creature. i think its legit that they keep finding all these things but maybe there just mixtures that we havent seen. like bbq twist chips and sour gummy worms? great mix like large rats

I read the article on the giant rat at the volcano, and I think thats its really cool that they have their own little world. This article talks about the Bosavi giant woolly rat but I don't think that it is quite as big as the ones that everybody else is talking about. I can't beleive that they are still finding places like this where there are animals that have never been seen before such as the Bosavi Silky Cuscus which is a marsupial that looks like a small bear. I think that they should continue these expeditions and maybe they will find a unique animal like no other.

I think it's cool that we keep finding new species of animals that we didn't even know existed. I read the article about the giant rat and find it interesting that they don't seem to be afraid of humans. I'm glad that they are living far away from here though and in that isolated crater because I wouldn't want to meet one of those giant rats even though they're vegetarians.

I think it's pretty cool that they are going to protect the environment for these animals. I think we need to do this more often to protect our animals all over the world because it's most likely inevitable that we'll have an ice age and we should protect the animals because their the ones that will be smart enough to stay alive while most of the human population will probably die off.

The Giant rat reminds me of the "princess bride" there are rats of unusual size... there pretty huge. And to think that movie was made like 20 years ago and were just now finding the real thing is pretty cool

It's pretty neat that on a single expididtion they found 16 new species, and even a new mammal that was that much larger than a rat everyone is familiar with. it's astounding to think of all the things we don't know about earth even on land. it's quit a science experiment.

I think its kind of cool that their are bigger rats that the ones we know of. It would make them easier to catch not that want too i'm just saying if you ever come across one and you want to kill it it cant creep into little spaces. But if we've discovered new rat species you gotta wander what else is out there.

ReplyDeleteThe giant rat thing is kinda gross. There's like a 1000 : 1 ratio of rats per human in New York. If the rat is 5x the size of normal rats and fearless of humans...Indonesia would be swarming. The tiny possum is cute, I hate the normal sized possums, they're gross with their beedy eyes and rat tails.

I do think that the discovery of these animals is very cool, but it won't be the last time a new animal is discovered. The earth is so massive. I don't think humans will ever be able to document all the species on earth. There is just too much space. Not to mention the ocean. The ocean is full of territory that will most likely never be searched. The two new species are very interesting.
