Is it really that big of a deal???

I have always said that I would rather go out to a nice meal than buy a new shirt or anything else like that. My Costco membership is payed in full by the amount of free samples that I eat when I am there. In other words I have no right to say what anyone should or should not do as it pertains to eating habits. Do you think that we make too much of a big deal about obesity? What should the governments role be when we look at dieting? Remember to write a paragraph, not just a sentence.

  1. I definitely don't think we make too big a deal about obesity. People are dying everyday because they cant control their weight. Dying. Maybe if we make a big spectacle on the subject of obesity, the message will get into people's heads. The government could definitely take further precautions to protect our country from the "disease" of obesity. As much as we hate extensive government control, clearly Americans are not capable of preventing this disease ourselves. Morgan Powell Period. 2

  2. I don't think people really understand what all the cheap, fast food does to their body. I know that they understand that it is bad for them, but they don't actually know what it does. There should be more information readily available to us about what we are eating, more that just the nutritional facts.

  3. I don't think we make to big of a deal about obesity. There are a lot of people in this world who are over weight. But why this is happening is because fast food and unhealthy food is cheaper then fruit and vegetables or anything that's really healthy for us, so with that being said of course a lot of people are going to become obese because of the cost of the food they eat. Our government could try to help but probably won't take affect people will keep there same habits.

I don't think obesity is taken seriously enough in the United States. Unhealthy diets can cause more damage than just your weight. It effects everything including your mood and digestion system with symptoms of clogged arteries, tiredness, and feeling sluggish. Eating healthy isn't promoting the "perfect body", but it is promoting a healthier and happier lifestyle no matter what your size or body shape! Being healthy is what really matters and I feel that we as a nation have given up on that concept.

  5. I personally don't think we put enough emphasis on the seriousness of obesity. It is such a pressing issue in our country and people act like they could care less. Being obese doesn't just mean you are overweight, it means you are dealing with all the health issues that come along with a poor diet and no exercise. I think that a lot of Americans need to be educated on what they are really putting into their bodies because I believe that a lot of us have no clue. Being unhealthy is becoming the new normal and it is sad to see.

  6. People will always dig their own graves. All throughout history, no matter what we, as a society, do or say, the public will always do as they please, sometimes just to spite the authority. The United States is taking big steps to prevent obesity in children whereas to create a brighter future, but not as much progress is being made with the adults, who were raised that way, and, in turn, are raising their children that way. It is a never ending cycle, but I do believe with proper steps and caution America can break the chain and decrease the high rate of obesity, if not around the world, at least our own country.

  7. With a world of over weight people there isn't much any one can do to help them. No matter what the government does to prevent it people will still get what they want, just like during prohibition. I personally think the government shouldn't try to handle the problem and let nature take its place. The world has always been about survival of the fittest and I think we should continue to let that process continue and people will start to change whenthey realize the consequences. 8. Obesity is a huge problem in the United States. It is not something that should be overlooked. 61% of the country is overweight. That's pathetic. However, I believe that we will not be able to change other peoples habits, we can only control our own. We need to educate our people or the effects it has on your health and self confidence. Once educated people will do as they please.

  9. We make too big of a deal about the wrong part of obesity. Eating habits in general should be healthier, but instead of nailing the people eating only what they can afford, the govermnent should crack down on the dangerous and unhealthy ways our food is made. It's nearly impossible to eat well when even the stuff marked as "healthy" has been soaked in chemicals, stripped of all good nutrients, and stuffed with other things that we don't even need. 10. New statistics show childhood obesity rates in the United States are dropping, but obesity in adults still accounts for 18% of deaths among black Americans between ages 40 and 85, according to a study published this past week in the American Journal of Public Health. Researchers say that's approximately 1 in 5 Americans are dying from illnesses related to obesity. That means that every year about 64,365,346 people die due to obesity related illness (current US population at 8:30 pm March 13, 2014 was 321,826,730). Even though this statistics may not surprise those who work in public health, they are nearly three times higher than previous estimates. I do believe that obesity is a large problem, not just for America but for the rest of the world. Saying that human are going to get lazier and lazier then the obesity rate is going to go up, up, up, and up. We need to make the populating realize were we, as people, are going. By cutting out white wheat and corn you can massively start losing weight, but everything, good, contains these two items. Obesity is up those who know they are obese; it is up to them to look after their weight and determine if they want to lose weight, or keep digging themselves into a hole that they could possibly not get out from.

  11. I think we should make more of a big deal about trying to control obesity. It's pretty obvious that obesity is a problem in America, but most people don't care that it's happening. The government can only do so much. I'd rather they didn't do anything. It's not the governments job to baby Americans on their lifestyle choices. If anything the government should control big industries like McDonald's so the don't become their own world power and make us fat and what not. Yo, all you gotta do is drink water, run some stairs, and eat an apple. Simpatico! No but really, just try your best at being healthy and you're golden.

  12. It is shocking to see the statistics of obesity across the world. What is not surprising is the fact that America is in the top numbers of those statistics. It makes sense due to the American way of fast food being a common thing in our lives. We have this sense of making and doing things easier and cheaper, and by that ideal we incorporate that into how we eat and go aboout excercise. Many Americans see fast food as cheap and easy, and excercising is a thing not many bother to deal with. With these factors obesity is on a rise in America, and isn't a thing made a big enough deal about. We see the signs of it, but do little to change it. We still have fast food on almost every corner of city blocks, promote this fast food, and show our children how fast food is just as good as it is cheap. We are obviously over looking the problem if more than half the nation is over weight. The government could play many roles in possibly rectifying the problem, but society as a whole has been taught that this way of life is easier rather than looking at it as being unhealthy for us. The government could change the way food is processed and handled, but they won't. To them it's all about the money, and where the money is at is the mass production of unhealthy food. The government knows this is what the public wants so they will keep supplying us with this mass of preserved, high fat, slow death traps we call "food". Obesity isn't something that should be over looked. It's killing people on their own sheer will just because of the choices they make, but that is just it. Obesity is a choice to many people, and it's their choice to change it. It shouldn't be up to the government, but up to the people to change our lives for the healthier and make the problem change in our own hands. It's up to us, as a nation, to change those statistics and live our lives to the healthiest it can be.

  13. I believe that the government makes a big deal over nothing. People are eating because it makes them happy. They may be over weight and not as healthy, but honestly that's their choice. The government shouldn't feel the need to control people. Maybe they should try to control the millions of fast food restaraunts being put in to every town. I feel that the main goal of a persons life is to be happy, if they are constantly worring about gaining a pound and how many calories they eat, that's just creating more stress. If a person feels like being skinnier would make them happier or healthier, then they will change. The government should regulate the fast food industries if they feel that obesity is getting out of control.

  14. I do feel like obesity is an issues but is it really such a big deal? Everyone makes a big deal about what people eat and the fact some people don't exercise. If you are bigger and are okay with that it should be your choice. If you want to eat unhealthy and not take the right steps to become healthy then that's your choice. The only thing we can do is make sure everyone knows about the risks of being obese. If you can't afford the healthy food obviously you are going to get the cheaper unhealthy food. If the government has that big of an issue with it they should reduce the unhealthy food being made but of course they wouldn't do it because they'd lose money. All in all I believe if you're happy weather you're skinny or obese its your choice.

  15. I feel like obesity is an issue that needs needs to be recognised, because even though people are aware of it right now. So many peole choose to do absolutely nothing about it. So even though we know it is a problem it's like we choose not to care about what we are eating and what we are feeding kids. If people keep treating obesity like a small issue, then that is what it will become, and right now that is where we are headed.

  16. I think obesity is a big deal in the United States, and I dont think we make enough of a big deal about it. People are dieing everyday from obesity, and getting illnesses that are life threatening. It makes me sad to see people not being able to walk from obesity.. or even see people being proud of how big of a hamburger they can eat. The fast food restaurants are a huge factor of obesity. It costs less to buy a hamburger, than it is to get a salad. And to me, I think that is a humongous problem that the government needs to look into. I do know its everyones choice on what they put into their body, and thats fine. I just wish things would be made more healthier. Ciara D P.2

  17. I think obesity is a large problem in the world today. As America is 2nd only to Mexico, you can tell that it's been a huge issue. The children of today are becoming larger and larger, not being able to do as much as the children of the past. I remember in a video the surgeon general stated that we are paying too much attention to terrorist threats, when obesity is killing millions here at home and no one is doing anything about it. I feel like the government should be making huge changes to challenge obesity, it's becoming too expensive to eat healthy and be on a normal diet than to just pay a few bucks to get a bunch of cheap junk food. Our government really needs to make a change on how people are eating. Plus obesity is overfeeding people while in 3rd world countries they are starving because they are malnourished. If all these obese people would stop needing so much food, then it would allow these other countries to be able to feed themselves.

  18. obesity it a very big problem in this generation.Partly because most Americans only eat fast food for the convenience and the cost. In my opinion the high growing rate of obesity is because of the government and its economy. The government has made it so it is impossible for lower class citizens to afford healthy organic foods. I think that the government should make it a law for fast food places to become healthier and follow an order of laws to ensure that their customers will not become obese from eating their food. The should also make organic foods in grocery stores attainable for the lower class citizens as well. The government in fact does have a large impact on the the obesity rates in the United States. If you look at any other first world country obesity rates are not as high. In fact ,in all other countries lower class citizens will hardly ever become obese. Obesity is a problem our government created by putting too many preservatives in all of our food, and making organic healthy food difficult to obtain.

  19. Obesity is a huge problem in America and yet, I don't think we make enough of a big deal about it. Usually, like everywhere, we hear that the U.S. has a high percentage of obesity, but people don't really think much about it. We usually just ignore it and continue with are day. Everyone as an individual should take in consideration on what we're eating and try to eat better. I'm not saying stop eating and try to be a model with the perfect body because I certainly know that I'm not the healthiest person to be judging.
Most people go to fast food places for convenience and the cost. For this I think the government should step in and try to make it easier for people to obtain healthier food for a lower cost.

  20. I honestly feel it's really bad. I feel like the government should defenitly bring back or bring a program to promote good and healthy eating. Let's also take into consideration that it is the persons choice to eat good food. If one really wants stay they would try to be fit. The person does what he wants.

  21. I think obesity is a really large problem in this country (pun intended). I understand why the government makes a big deal because obesity kills more people than war does. It's a problem because people usually don't know what they're eating . Yes it's every person's choice what they eat, but it's not reasonable to ask people to choose what to feed their family if they don't know what goes into their food. The biggest acheivement would be to educate everyone about what they're eating and then let them choose.

  22. Obesity is a personal problem, and people need to realize that. Some people chose to be fat and they must live with the consequences that come from it. If people are not willing to change why should that be our problem? Yes obesity is a growing problem, but why does the government need to step in? instead of wasting money on obesity, which will never be fully solved, we should spend it on usefull things such as education.

  23. Our problem with eating is that we aren't only eating too much, but we're eating to much of the wrong things and we're producing more food than we could ever eat -though we do seem to be trying-. We are on an endless cycle of too much which is surprisingly closely followed by too little. Personally I would rather eat something full of fat and sugar rather than a handful of nuts, and on top of that want for something that taste better rather than what is better for you there is a budget system as well. If the government really cares to help as they say they do then they should make healthier foods more readily available instead of having the twinkies cost less than the carrots. So, yes obesity is a major issue, and it certainly isn't an easy solution, but we have no one to blame but ourselves for our choices because we choose cheap over good.

  24. Obesity should be looked at as a big deal because it effects a lot of people. Obesity causes many health problems that lead to earlier deaths. Along with diabetes obesity causes heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, and osteoarthritis. With the rising rate of child obesity I feel like it should be looked at as a serious issue. As for what the government should do about it they could stop mass producing foods that are so unhealthy for us and lower some of the costs of foods that are better for us. They government has done some things to make the lunches at schools healthier but I feel like they could be doing more to promote healthy eating habits in kids as well as teens. Healthy eating habits are easier to keep when they are taught to you when you're younger rather than trying to change them when you're older.

  26. I do not think that we make a big deal about obesity because it is one of the biggest epidemics in our country right now and it needs to stopped. The governments role about dieting should be that they should bring different types of tips to dieting. They could give different charts or tables stating what foods are more healthier than others. That could be a small step to stop obesity.

  27. I believe that we don't make a big enough deal about the topic of obesity. We talk about obesity in school, but that is about it. No one tries to actively help fight obesity. I believe that the government needs to create programs in every school that help the students create a healthy diet and exercise plan that they can incorporate into their lives at both home and school. Free fitness programs should be offered through schools as well as either a class or afterschool activity. This could dramatically cut obesity in school-age childelren. Another option could be either to increase the prices of unhealthy foods or decrease the prices of healthy options.

  28. Well. It depends. Obesity itself was never really a problem back a thousand or so years back. Kings, and nobles are depicted to be very obese, but the citizens of the king fought for scraps, but as time went by, and money was more on hand, obesity would rise. Now is it unhealthy? Yes, but it does not render someone unable to work or contribute. But an ethical problem that hangs in the air is that there are still people malnourished in different parts in the world. Now should obese people feel bad? No, its not their fault people are starving, but they Dont understand what it is like to fight for their food.

  29. Obesity isn't a big deal at all. If 1 in 3 adults are obese and we still keep fattening foods at a lower price than healthy, nutritious food, obviously it's not a big deal. It is difficult to be healthy when unhealthy food is so easy to get. It's cheap to buy fast food rather than healthy ingredients to be made at home. If we made obesity such a big deal, it wouldn't be like this. We need to have healthier options that are priced the same as the unhealthy food, or cheaper.

Being part of an obese family I know very well how obesity is bad, my dad and ant both did an operation to lose weight because they were about to die, both lost a hundred pounds and are way happier know, however they also have to deal with some bad consequences like loose of hair, some internal problems, etc. So obesity is a very big deal and the people need to take this as another fatal disease as cancer.

  31. Obesity is a huge problem in America. Part of the problem is nothing is being done for the most part. People need to eat less fast food and prepare more meals. Cheap food that is convenient is the problem. There needs to be a bigger focus on healthy homemade food rather than fast food. If you do that then you will see a decline in obesity and medical problems associated with obesity.

I strongly believe that it is not the government's responsibility to do anything however I do believe that as a country it is our responsibility to create a better tomorrow, to create a country that we are proud of and a place we can proudly call our home because if we do not create a better country for ourselves no one else will. 37. This is suuuuuper late, however, here is my blog post. I think that the government should regulate the food being produced; not change the American people. If government legislature is passed restricting the amount of processed foods sold at grocery dispensaries, the first step in world health will commence. Will they ever do this? Probably not. If you look at the obese Americans, the vast majority of them do not have a medical condition causing them to gain weight; it is simply a lack of exercise and nutritional balance. As a teenager, I admit I am fairly active. Nonetheless, over 25% of the obesity statistic rests in children under 11. CHILDREN! why?Because of a lack of exercise and the massive consumption of processed foods. So, why are processed foods so accessible? Because they are cheap. It costs way more to get a bunch of bananas that it does to get fruit snacks or a candy bar. It seems that "healthy food" has now been slandered to the point where a lot of people couplet the term with something gross tasting or a bad experience. Same goes with exercise. We as a nation are lazy, I hate to admit. If the product decreases, so will the demand. More healthy foods and produce will be purchased and it will help farm economy as well. As for the necessary increase in exercise? Well, the motivation is entirely dependent on the individual and their desire to be fit.

Unless we're going to lock up the bigwigs over at McDonalds people should stop making such a fuss about it. What we eat is our choice. The government is already looking over my shoulder at my phone, the last thing I want is them telling me what I can and can not eat.
