Extra Credit Post

As you know new species are discovered all of the time. In looking at the importance on new species and what they may have to offer it is very important that we continue to look for new animals as well as plants. For this extra credit post I would like you to research and find a newly discovered animal that you think looks interesting and tell me about it (where its found, what it is (include name) and what they know about it. Use real animals please, as cool as the jackalope is, its not real.

I chose the newly discovered "African wolf" which was formerly named "African jackal" because I love wolves and coyotes and this wolf looks like a strange cross-breed of my favorites.
The African wolf was known by zoologist for years as the African jackal because it bore fair resemblance to the Golden jackal of Africa. It was thought to be a subspecies until researchers made a startling discovery. They ran tests on the DNA of the African jackal and found DNA matches more similar to the gray wolf than to the Golden jackal! On further inspection it was found to be closer to the gray wolf than the neighboring Ethiopian wolf. Similar species are found in lower Asia and India. The African wolf does resemble a jackal more than a wolf.
Researchers are looking into the whereabouts of this incredible new species of wolf and so far they appear to be very rare. We do not know much about the African wolf as of right now. We do know it's coloring and distinctiveness as well as it's potential range.

The golden-mantled tree kangaroo was found by a team of Indonesian, American, and Australian scientists on the island of New Guinea. This animal was first discovered in 2005 and is the rarest of tree kangaroos with only two sitings. It is also considerably endangered. The kangaroo has a brown short coat, kind of a pinkish face, a yellowy neck, belly, and feet and has two golden stripes down it's back. A very unique appearance.

  7. The Varanus Bitatawa is a new monitor lizzard discovered in 2011. It is a surprising 6 feet and 6 inches long, but only weighs 22 pounds. This significantly small weight for its size is probably due to the fact that it eats fruit for its diet. It was discovered in the Philipines. The Varanus Bitatawa has a dark body, covered in yellowish-green spots with some flecks of gold striping.

  8. A newly discovered species I found that looked semi-interesting, as well as it being the first animal I found was the monitor lizard, only found in Luzon Island, Philippines. It's a two-meter long lizard that has somehow found a way to avoid science. It's scientific name is the Varanus Bitatawa. The animal is brightly colored with stripes of gold flecks. Its scaly body and legs are a blue-black, mottled color, with pale yellow-green dots, and it's tail switches with segments of black and green. They say it's closely related to the Komodo Dragon on Indonesia. It was a confirmed species in April 2010 by the University of Kansas. So far scientists say that the species is strictly only in Sierra Madre Forest.

  14. The Duiker located near the Ecological Center of Manigri, Igbere. This new duiker from West Africa was first encountered at a bushmeat market. It is a surprising find because, “The discovery of a new species from a well-studied group of animals in the context of bushmeat exploitation is a sobering reminder of the mammalian species that remain to be described, even within those that are being exploited on a daily basis for food or ritual activities.” The taxonomic description of Philantomba walteri should facilitate research into its ecology and behaviour, as well as its conservation.

  15. The animal I chose was the Dinospider [Atewa dinospider] its an ancient spider that was found during a 2006 expedition to Ghana’s Atewa Range Forest Reserve. It looks like a cross between a spider and a crab, the male carries his sex organs on his legs, and eats termites and ant larvae.

The Emperor scorpion is bright blue under UV light and is one of the largest scorpions in the world. This scorpion eats termites and other small insects, and even though it has venom, it is not that dangerous to humans. Compounds in the scorpion's venom are being tested, however, as a possible drug for heart arrhythmia, and its blue beta-carbolines are studied to better understand the protein degeneration that leads to cataracts.
