Mammals

Here are two new mammals that were discovered within the last year. Take a look, read the article and comment on one of the species. Check related stories on the site to read about a giant rat that has been found in a volcano crater.

Fish Soup DNA

This is a short article about the declining numbers of shark and how we are now tracking sharks based on thier DNA. For this post just write about 1 interesting point that they bring up. (agian for full credit you must actually share your thoughts, not just "this is cool" or "this sucks")

Dissections

When I taught in Chiloquin I recieved a letter telling me I would lose my job if I let me students do dissections. I have had a few students complain about having to touch dead animals. I have had others ask me where they get the animals from. In knowing that they have "special farms" for dissections do you think that we are inhumane in having you do them? What advantages are there in doing actual dissections vs. virtual dissections?

Jurassic Park?

Scientists want to take this frozen baby mammoth and see if they can clone it. They would take an egg of an elephant and take out its DNA, then inject the DNA of mammoth and in turn a true mammoth would be born. What do you think? Should we bring back extinct animals or let nature be?

There have been people who have had thier pets cloned so they can have the same pet over thier life. Its is like having an identical twin of the original pet. (Counciling for your children?)
Would you have your pet cloned?

Fear-> What is it?

As the halloween season passes I wonder what the emotion fear has done for our progression in evoltion. This weeks post is for extra credit. I would like for you to talk about why fear is there. Looking at one human example and one animal example explain how organisms respond to fear and why you think they might respond like that.

National Geographic Human Genome

We will be going to the computer lab this week t0 look at human migratory patterns. As you look at the human mapping systems I want you to find the most interesting part. You should be able to find genetic markers as well as the history of human movement. On this post I want you to choose one topic that interests you with this research and tell why you like it. Be specific on what you like and why.
